A mild earthquake measuring 3.3 on the Richter scale struck Rohtak in the early hours of Thursday. The tremor occurred at 12:46 am, with the epicentre located 17 kilometers east of Rohtak city at a depth of 10 kilometers beneath the earth’s surface, according to the National Centre for Seismology.

This is Haryana’s fourth significant earthquake in last eight days. On July 11, Jhajjar district experienced a 3.7 magnitude tremor, followed just hours later by a more powerful 4.4 magnitude quake in the same region.

People across Delhi-NCR also reported feeling the tremors, with many sharing their experiences on social media and earthquake alert apps.

Seismological data indicates that four quakes measuring above 2.5 magnitude have occurred within a 40-kilometer radius of Rohtak since July 10.

Delhi-NCR and nearby areas like Jhajjar and Rohtak lie atop a web of active geological fault lines, including the Mahendragarh-Dehradun Fault (MDF), Delhi-Haridwar Ridge, Delhi-Sargodha Ridge, and Sohna and Mathura faults, among others.

This region is tectonically influenced by both the distant Himalayan plate movements and local fault activity. The Mahendragarh-Dehradun Fault, one of the most critical, connects the stable Indian plate to the active Himalayan Frontal Thrust and runs through densely populated areas of NCR.

Seismologists note that while most quakes here range from magnitude 2.0 to 4.5, they signal ongoing tectonic stress. The July 11 tremor, for example, is believed to have occurred near the MDF.

Given its complex fault lines and proximity to the Himalayas, Delhi-NCR remains vulnerable to both moderate and potentially more severe seismic activity.
