NEW DELHI: The opposition on Wednesday staged a unique protest outside the Maharashtra assembly against Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad for allegedly assaulting a canteen worker over stale food.Opposition MLAs gathered on the steps of the Vidhan Sabha, wearing vests and towels, and raised slogans like “We condemn the chaddi-baniyan gang.”The protest came after Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray took a veiled jab at Shiv Sena MLAs Sanjay Gaikwad and Sanjay Shirsat, referring to them as part of a “chaddi-baniyan gang.”“They do whatever they want to because to do not have fear,” Thackeray said. The jibe referenced viral videos in which Buldhana MLA Sanjay Gaikwad, dressed in a vest and towel, was seen physically assaulting a canteen worker over allegedly stale dal.Last week, Gaikwad reportedly thrashed a staffer and manhandled another at the Akashwani MLAs’ hostel canteen in Mumbai’s Colaba. The incident drew strong condemnation not only from the opposition but also from the ruling alliance, including chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and deputy CM Eknath Shinde.Following the incident, Mumbai Police registered a non-cognisable offence against Gaikwad. Additionally, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) suspended the canteen contractor’s license.Meanwhile, another Shiv Sena MLA, Sanjay Shirsat, faced controversy after a video surfaced showing him sitting in a room with a partially open bag that appeared to contain bundles of currency notes. Shirsat dismissed the allegations, calling the video a “well-thought-out conspiracy.”
