Celebrated actor Vidya Balan struck a deep emotional chord with students at the 10th edition of India’s International Movement to Unite Nations (I.I.M.U.N.) “Role Model Series,” moderated by Rishabh Shah, founder of I.I.M.U.N held in Bandra. In a heartfelt and candid conversation, she spoke about embracing individuality, overcoming rejection, and the importance of self-love in an increasingly validation-seeking world. “There is only one of you in the world, so don’t waste your time trying to be anyone else,” she told the young audience. “You are unique, you’re different, you’re special, and you must celebrate that throughout your life.”
Vidya Balan shares thoughtful message on overcoming rejection: “I must have had great reserves of self-love”
Reflecting on her early struggles in the film industry, Balan revealed the harsh reality she faced when her first Malayalam film was shelved midway, causing a domino effect of being dropped from multiple projects. “They labeled me jinx. I was heartbroken because these are things you can’t do anything about,” she recalled. Despite the emotional toll, she contrasted those times with today’s pressures. “Today, you get five likes on one picture and 500 on another, and you’re left wondering why. Kids today are dealing with constant judgment at such a young age—it’s far tougher now.”
Addressing the weight of social and peer validation, Balan shared how she endured years of being written off before finding her footing. “Rejection is never easy. When your dreams don’t come true, it’s very painful,” she admitted. But what got her through those dark times was an unshakable inner reserve: “I must have had great reserves of self-love. That’s the only reason I made it through. For three years, I was replaced in a dozen films. I felt angry with God, the world, and even my parents. But I didn’t give up.” Her story resonated as a powerful message of hope and resilience for the next generation navigating an age of comparison and instant feedback.
