Over the past decade, Dinesh Vijan has quietly transformed Maddock Films into one of the most sought-after studios in the Hindi film industry. From small-town comedies to horror universes and historical epics, the filmmaker-producer has built a content-driven legacy that’s finding both critical acclaim and box office success.

Vijan’s production house recently scored another major milestone with Stree 2, which emerged as one of the highest-grossing Hindi film domestically in 2024 and recently the period drama Chhaava also gaining immense love and earning moolah at the box office.  “Ours is a content-first approach. Anyone who has a whacked-out idea comes to us first, which is good. We like making artistic films that resonate with an emerging India,” Vijan told India Today.

Maddock Films has steadily moved away from traditional Bollywood formulas, often choosing scripts that don’t depend on megastar casting. Its slate features titles like Hindi Medium, Mimi, and Zara Hatke Zara Bachke, along with a growing horror-comedy universe that includes Stree, Bhediya, and Munjya.

“Dinesh sees the film and its trailer in the narration. Then, he is able to summarise a film really well. Each point is there and it sounds good. He’s that sharp,” said Amar Kaushik, director of Stree and Stree 2.

Vicky Kaushal, who plays the lead in Chhaava, highlighted the studio’s focus on homegrown stories: “He is truly focused to find stories from our own culture, land and history. That viewpoint is the magic masala to put Indian cinema on the global map.” Laxman Utekar, who helmed Chhaava, added, “As the industry is thinking, ‘let’s make horror comedy’, Dinesh Vijan is not following the path of success. He is walking on one where there are challenges.”

Actor Kriti Sanon, who worked with the studio on many films including Mimi, shared, “If he believes in a project or you, Dinesh doesn’t care about what others say. It’s easy to get affected by chatter, but he really backs his people and content.”

With eight new films already in development and a growing audience across platforms, Maddock Films continues to push for originality, exploring themes that blend tradition with a modern lens. For Dinesh Vijan, the goal seems clear: champion fresh stories that reflect the evolving face of India. And so far, the strategy is working.
