The beauty community may be abuzz right now over the latest in K-beauty, but Japan (not to pit two queens against each other) is just as much a hub of skin-care innovation as its neighbor. The best Japanese sunscreen, in particular, shines, with many travelers stocking up on their trips to the island—or going as far as asking friends to bring these coveted cosmetic staples back to the States for them.
Vogue‘s Favorite Japanese Sunscreens
Japan has strict sunscreen regulations to ensure high standards and qualities for safety and effectiveness. “Many brands in Japan use advanced UV filters and innovative technology to make sunscreen hypoallergenic and multifunctional, meaning it can nourish your skin, moisturize, protect your skin from pollution, and even work like a primer,” licensed esthetician Kyoko Getz explains.
Japanese sunscreens also offer a sensorial experience, often featuring a milky, lightweight texture that effortlessly melts into the skin. Similar to Korean sunscreens, they frequently incorporate skin-nourishing ingredients like hyaluronic acid and antioxidants. “These additives bolster sun protection and contribute to overall skin health, providing hydration and combating signs of aging,” Superegg founder and licensed esthetician Erica Choi says. (I really wanted to gate-keep these picks, but alas, my editor said that went against the Hippocratic oath of editorial.) Below, 10 of our favorite Japanese sunscreens.

Why Are Japanese Sunscreens Better?
Japanese sunscreens are renowned globally for their efficacy and user-friendly formulations. Choi explains that they typically offer SPF 50, ensuring robust protection against both UVA and UVB rays. Additionally, they use the PA rating system, with many achieving the highest grade of PA++++, indicating strong defense against UVA rays that cause skin aging and long-term damage. Plus, these sunscreens utilize advanced filters that have not yet been approved by the FDA.
“Their lightweight textures absorb quickly into the skin, making them ideal for everyday use, whether under makeup or alone, especially in extremely hot summer weather. This enhances comfort and encourages consistent use,” Choi says.
What to Look for in Japanese Sunscreens
SPF Level
Unlike American sunscreens, Japanese sunscreens include both SPF (Sun Protection Factor) and PA (Protection Grade of UVA) information on the product label. While it might seem redundant, Choi explains that PA is a rating system used on Japanese sunscreens to indicate the level of protection against UVA rays. SPF measures protection against UVB rays, so you can find perfect protection against both UVA and UVB by checking the SPF and PA info on the label. The PA scale ranges from PA+ (some UVA protection) to PA++++ (extremely high UVA protection).
“I would recommend SPF 30 and PA+++ for everyday use, offering good protection for daily activities, and SPF 50 and PA+++ or PA++++ for outdoor activities or intense sun exposure,” she says. Manufacturers have responded to these demands by developing lightweight textures that are easy to spread, have great consistency, provide hydration with a nonsticky finish, and offer waterproof or water-resistant functions for every consumer.
Chemical Versus Mineral Filters
While the debate between mineral and chemical filters continues, Getz personally prefers sunscreens with chemical filters for daily use due to their effective protection and clear, non-greasy feel. Some popular ingredients like Tinosorb and Uvinul are frequently used in Japanese sunscreens for their broad-spectrum coverage and stability. Getz adds, “Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are well-known ingredients as mineral filters in Japanese mineral sunscreens.”
Texture
According to Getz, one of the main reasons why Japanese sunscreens are highly popular is their unique texture. Japanese sunscreens are beloved for their non-greasy, nonsticky lightweight texture that absorbs quickly. “In the hot and humid summers of Japan, we tend to prefer products with a light texture,” she explains. “Many people also use sunscreens before applying makeup, so we appreciate sunscreens with a serum or primer-like performance and texture.”
How do the Japanese prioritize sun protection?
According to Getz, sun protection is deeply ingrained in Japanese culture from a young age. Given the intense summer heat, the Japanese rely not only on sunscreen, but also on physical barriers like UV umbrellas, sun-protective clothing, arm-and-hand covers (often worn outdoors and even while driving), wide-brimmed hats, visors, and face shields to safeguard against sun damage. “I honestly don’t know a single woman in my family or friend circle in Japan who doesn’t own a UV umbrella,” she says. “Fair, even-toned skin has traditionally been associated with beauty in Japanese culture, so many women are extremely mindful of sun exposure.”
The climate also plays a role: Since summers in Japan are hot and humid, both mineral and chemical sunscreens are typically formulated to be lightweight, fast-absorbing, non-greasy, and non-sticky.
