Ravi Chhabriya, who debuted as a director with the Diljit Dosanjh-starrer Detective Sherdil, had extensively worked as an assistant director in several films. Three of these films starred Salman Khan – Sultan (2016), Tiger Zinda Hai (2017) and Bharat (2019) – and in all three of them, the superstar was seen in diverse avatars. In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, Ravi Chhabriya talked in detail about his association with Salman Khan and a lot more.
EXCLUSIVE: Detective Sherdil director Ravi Chhabriya talks about working in three Salman Khan films as an AD; opens up on Sultan’s unforgettable mirror scene: “The way he performed that scene gave us GOOSEBUMPS…camera GENUINELY loves him”
Ravi Chhabriya said, “Salman sir and I have a very cool relationship (smiles). I have learned a lot from him. As assistants, it used to be a dream to work with big stars. When you work with them, you realize why they are so big. The outsiders might feel that it’s all hunky dory. But most of the time, we used to only talk about cinema. It was like a university as you keep on learning while interacting with these top actors.”
He added, “Salman sir is very sharp. He is watching some kind of content every day. That’s what stars do – they learn so much about their craft through this exercise.”
When asked to share the most memorable episode involving Salman Khan, Ravi Chhabriya revealed, “I clearly remember two incidents. One was the scene in Sultan where he removes his shirt in front of the mirror. The way he performed that scene in front of our eyes gave us goosebumps. Seeing the scene as an audience hits you as well. But when you are there at the moment, it hits you differently and it gets into your core memory.”
He continued, “The second is the scene in Tiger Zinda Hai where he comes out with a gun and goes all out. The aura of him that I saw that day is again something that is in my core memory. The camera genuinely loves him.”
The scene of Salman Khan with the giant machine gun achieved cult status. It was later replicated in many films like Kaithi (2019), Vikram (2022), KGF – Chapter 2 (2022), Pathaan (2023), Bholaa (2023), Animal (2023) etc. Ravi Chhabriya agreed and praised director Ali Abbas Zafar for it. He stated, “He’s my guru and in my view, he’s a magician. He knows his craft, and he also knows how to handle people. I give most of the credit to Ali sir as I have learned execution and storytelling techniques from him.”
