In a major crackdown under Operation Kalanemi, Dehradun Police arrested 25 individuals posing as fake sadhus at public places in the city, including one Bangladeshi national.
The drive was launched on the directive of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami to root out impostors exploiting religious sentiments.
According to police, those arrested neither possessed religious or astrological knowledge nor valid documents. Cases under Section 170 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) have been registered against them.
The Bangladeshi national, identified as 26-year-old Rukan Rakam alias Shah Alam from Tangail district in Dhaka, has been booked under the Foreigners Act.
The other accused hail from various states, including Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Assam. Their identities and background records are being thoroughly verified.
The police suspect these individuals intended to mislead the public under the guise of religious faith. Officials said stern action is being taken against such impostors who pose a threat to public trust.
Dehradun Police also urged citizens to remain alert and report any suspicious sadhus or religious figures to the nearest police station. Operation Kalanemi will continue in the coming days to ensure public safety and prevent religious exploitation.
