Shiney Ahuja, an actor who was once hailed as the next big thing in Bollywood, vanished from the entertainment world with just a blink of the eye. The handsome actor, now a forgotten Bollywood hero, stole many hearts with his spectacular performances in films such as Gangster, Life In A Metro, Bhool Bhulaiyaa, and Woh Lamhe.

Everything was going great in Shiney’s life until 2009, when, on a fine day, the actor found himself embroiled in the most shocking controversy of his life. Shiney’s 19-year-old house help accused the actor of raping her in his house in Mumbai. The allegations made by Shiney’s maid shocked his entire fan base and industry. He was booked under Section 376 (rape) and Section 506 (threat to kill) of the Indian Penal Code.

As per a report of Hindustan Times, Shiney Ahuja’s wife, Anupam Pande, hailed from a conservative middle-class family from Jamshedpur. She later moved to Delhi, where she completed her schooling and college. She graduated with a degree in Economics and worked with multinational companies.

When Shiney’s films started doing well, Anupam was offered a dream job with an American company as the Director, Marketing. Since the company was located in New York, Anupam was sceptical about taking up the offer. But Shiney pushed her into accepting it, and the couple stayed in a long-distance marriage for three years.

However, the long-distance marriage was becoming difficult for Anupam, and she quit her job and returned to Mumbai. Soon, the couple welcomed their daughter, Arshya, and she became the centre of their universe.

Although Shiney was a star, Anupam never liked the limelight, as she wanted a normal environment to raise her child. For almost a decade, Anupam remained as her husband’s shadow, but the devoted wife grabbed everyone’s attention when she ascertained that her husband was ‘framed’.

In her fiery press conference, Anupam spoke her heart out and stated that her husband was innocent and that ‘rape could be committed by a woman too’. Throughout the case, Anupam stood with her man and defended him in every press meeting. During one of the interactions with a leading daily, she stated:

“I am not a girl in love with him blindly, I know him for 15 years, he has no vices… doesn’t drink or smoke and comes home regularly. I believe in my man.”

After the allegation by Shiney’s maid, the actor was booked under Section 376 and was taken to Arthur Road Jail for trial. During the trial, while the domestic help initially withdrew all accusations, the judge believed her to be falsely pressurised and, as a result, Shiney was condemned to seven years of imprisonment in 2011. Shiney later filed an appeal in the High Court and was granted interim bail. In 2023, the Bombay High Court authorised Shiney Ahuja for a 10-year renewal of his passport.
