Hours after the screening of Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan, which marks the big-screen debut of Shanaya Kapoor, filmmaker Karan Johar took to social media to shower praise on the newcomer. Shanaya, daughter of actor Sanjay Kapoor and Maheep Kapoor, was earlier set to debut under Karan Johar’s banner in the now-shelved film Bedhadak.

In a detailed Instagram post, Karan reflected on his long-standing bond with Shanaya’s family and applauded her dedication. “I have known Sanjay and Maheep for over three decades… battling storms that have come in their way with a broad smile on their faces and always an impeccable sense of humour… The centres of their universe has always been their children Shanaya and Jahaan (fun fact: I have named him),” he wrote.
Calling Shanaya “an exceptionally hard-working girl,” the filmmaker added, “She has poured her heart and soul into her debut feature… will of course let her work speak for itself and I know it will… Shine on Shanaya and welcome to the movies.” Several celebrities reacted warmly to Karan’s post. Actor Aparshakti Khurana commented, “Just saw the film! She is fab!” while Maheep Kapoor wrote, “I love you Karan.”
However, the post did not go unnoticed by social media users, many of whom pointed out Karan’s silence on Shanaya’s co-star, Vikrant Massey. Some accused him of favoritism, highlighting his consistent support for star kids while allegedly overlooking non-industry actors. A few comments questioned why Johar has never publicly endorsed talents like Kriti Sanon or praised performances from other self-made actors with similar enthusiasm.
Speaking of Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan, the film is set to release tomorrow, July 11. Presented by Zee Studios and Mini Films, the film is produced by Mansi Bagla, Varun Bagla, and Open Window Films. It is directed by Santosh Singh, written and conceptualized by Mansi Bagla, with music composed by Vishal Mishra.
