Ekta Kapoor recently reflected on the return of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, 25 years after its original premiere. Known for her work across television, films, and digital platforms, Kapoor took to social media to share her thoughts on why now felt like the right time to revisit the iconic show.

She began by addressing the initial hesitation around bringing the series back. “When the 25th year of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi was approaching and the idea of relaunching it surfaced, my first reaction was a firm no. Why would I want to shake up nostalgia? You can never compete with nostalgia. It always remains supreme,” she wrote.

Acknowledging the shift in television consumption over the years, she added, “The television space has changed. Once dependent on 9 cities, audiences now consume content in fragments, scattered across platforms. Would this shake the legacy of Kyunki? But was that truly the legacy of the show—just high numbers?”

Kapoor pointed to research that suggested Kyunki had contributed to changing social dynamics. “Research carried out by an international body once concluded that the show gave a voice to women in Indian homes. Between 2000 and 2005, women began participating in family discussions, a shift deeply influenced by Indian television, especially Kyunki and Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki,” she noted, also citing how the show addressed themes like domestic and marital abuse, age shaming, and euthanasia.

She further explained that the idea of closure also played a role. “In conversations with peers, the abrupt ending of the show lingered in our minds. It was unfinished.” The revival, she stated, is not about chasing ratings but rather engaging with relevant issues once again. “Can we bring back a time when a family sat on a dinner table and made conversations? The moment I asked myself this question, I had my answer.”

The new season of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi will come back in a limited-episode format. Kapoor said the intention is to spark conversations around themes such as parenting, boundaries, and communication—delivered through an engaging narrative rather than didactic storytelling. While concluding, Kapoor wrote, “We will never win against nostalgia. The fight is not about winning. It is about impact… To the show that’s not just ours, but also yours.”

Currently, Kapoor has several other projects in the pipeline. She is teaming up with TVF for the first time on VvAN, featuring Sidharth Malhotra and Tamannaah Bhatia. She is also reuniting with Akshay Kumar and Priyadarshan for the horror-comedy Bhooth Bangla and making her Malayalam debut with a film starring Mohanlal.
