Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee), located in Uttarakhand, traces its roots to 1847 when it began as the College of Civil Engineering at Roorkee under British rule. It was renamed Thomason College in 1853, became the University of Roorkee in 1949, and was elevated to IIT status in 2001.
