Neena Gupta, known for her candour, recently reflected on her early romances, sharing bittersweet memories of her first love.
Neena Gupta reflects on her first husband: “The love that I see in movies and read in books, I’ve never experienced that in real life”
Neena Gupta’s first marriage to Amlan Kusum Ghose ended amicably within a year. She later garnered attention for her relationship with former West Indies cricketer Vivian Richards, with whom she shares a daughter, Masaba Gupta. Many years later, she found enduring companionship with New Delhi-based chartered accountant Vivek Mehra, whom she privately married in 2008.
Long before her well-known relationships, Neena Gupta was smitten with her ‘first love’, a young man studying at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), whom she eventually married. Recalling the early days of this romance, she told News18 Showsha, “My first love was with an IIT guy, who I went on to marry eventually. My college fellows used to be very jealous of me at that time. Their parents wouldn’t allow them to wear spaghetti straps and I was a modern woman, according to them. Woh salwar kameez-chunni waale the aur woh mujhse jalte the.”
Neena went on to share an awkward incident from that time, highlighting the challenges that often come with young love.
Neena recalled an incident from her college days when a simple movie plan turned into an awkward situation. She shared, “This one time, my then-boyfriend and I decided to go watch a film. I revealed my plans to one of those girls by mistake and then they went and told my mother that main ek ladke ke saath picture dekhne jaa rahi hoon. My parents didn’t let me go. Back then, we didn’t have phones and so, I couldn’t inform him. He kept waiting for me.”
While Neena spoke fondly of her first love, she also offered a candid and unexpected take on the idea of love itself. She said, “I’ve never been in love. The love that I see in movies and read in books, I’ve never experienced that in real life. Nobody has loved me like that. Toh main bhi kaise kar loon? Karna bhi toh padhega na kisi ko. Mere peeche koi paagal nahi hua (laughs). But I had madly fallen in love with someone. It didn’t translate into a relationship because it wasn’t possible.”
On the professional front, Neena Gupta continues to impress audiences with her choice of roles. She was recently seen in Metro… In Dino and the web series Panchayat.
