Pride month may be over, but for many of us—including JT, rapper and certified “city Cinderella”—the party is just getting started.
JT spent the month of June, in her words, “being about it.” Meaning, engaging with the LGBTQ+ community in meaningful ways. She was the headlining act for New York City Pride this year—pretty fab—but before she got onstage in custom Luar, she made sure to give back.
The rapper partnered with Mother, Daughter, Holy Spirit (MDHS), a grassroots fundraiser in support of the Trans Justice Funding Project led by co-organizers Bobbi Salvör Menuez and John Mollett, to make an exclusive t-shirt. She joins a group of certified fashion darlings including Chloë Sevigny and Aimee Lou Wood, who have also created a custom tee in support of the project (and yes, they’re still available to shop now). Additionally, you can shop the closets of other fashion glitteratti, from Richie Shazam and Julia Fox to Hari Nef and Tommy Dorfman, on the MDHS site.
“I just wanted to ‘be about it,’” shared JT via email about deciding to partner with MDHS. “You know a lot of people talk about it,” supporting the community, that is, “[but] I wanted to give back for real and show my love and unwavering support to the beautiful trans women and men in a time where a lot of politicians and people seem to just can’t mind they damn business.” JT worked with Shazam this Pride month, who creative directed the production of the tee with artwork by Melia’s Dolls and conceptualized her performance on the rooftop of Pier 17 on June 28.
“JT’s vision was clear,” shared Shazam. “She wanted people to feel something when they experienced her music live. The JT experience is a one-of-a-kind fantasy—equal parts joy, intensity, and passion. It’s about taking up space unapologetically, about being loud, being seen, and embracing the full power of community.”
The show honored the legacy of American gay liberation activist Marsha P. Johnson and featured a reading by Tourmaline from her just-released biography of Johnson, Marsha: The Joy and Defiance of Marsha P. Johnson.
