In a recent chat, filmmaker Mohit Suri fondly recalled his cousin Alia Bhatt’s childhood, sharing that even before she turned 10, she was confident, charming, and determined to become an actor.

In a conversation with ETimes, Mohit Suri shared, “Since she was like six years old, she wanted to act,” recalling how it was clear to everyone that Alia was born for the camera. He added that her passion for films, music, and performing was evident from the very start.
Mohit recounted a memorable moment from 2005, when a remix video from his film Zeher had just been released. “The remix video on my song had come out, and Mahesh Bhatt Saab didn’t really understand it,” he recalled with a chuckle.
To his surprise, it was young Alia who defended the video. “She told him, ‘It’s damn good.’ She had that aptitude,” Mohit said, adding that Mahesh Bhatt eventually came around, saying, “If these young people like it, it means it’s really good.”
According to Mohit, Alia had been “super commercial ever since that time,” with an instinctive grasp of what resonated with audiences even as a child. He also fondly recalled their post-screening family traditions, saying, “I remember we used to go out for dinners after Bhatt sahab. If he liked the film, Alia and Soni would often join us.”
One especially endearing memory from those dinners stood out to Mohit. He recalled a moment when he tried to capture a photo of young Alia using an old Nokia phone. “She was standing next to a lamp, looking really pretty, and I took out my phone to click a picture. She asked, ‘What are you doing?’ I said, ‘Just clicking, you look pretty!’ She immediately turned and said, ‘You’re clicking the wrong side,’ and gave her dimple side,” he shared.
“I think she was 8 or 9 years old. Maybe even younger. But even then, she was so clear,” Mohit said, highlighting that her clarity wasn’t just a fleeting phase. “Alia always wanted to be an actress, be a star. We always knew that,” he emphasized.
Mohit Suri is set to return to the big screen with his upcoming directorial venture Saiyaara, where he reunites with fresh faces like Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda. The film also marks his first collaboration with YRF, with both known for their legacy of creating memorable love stories. Saiyaara is slated for a worldwide release on July 18, 2025.
