The role of natural light in architecture has gained increasing attention for its ability to transform physical spaces and influence human emotions. The design integrates expansive natural light, contributing to both the structure’s visual appeal and the well-being of its inhabitants. The thoughtful incorporation of natural light not only enhances the aesthetic quality of the space but also plays a crucial role in the emotional health of its occupants. Natural light is known to improve mood and productivity, making it a vital component in modern architectural designs.

Indiatoday spoke with Ar. Naveen G.J. and Ar. Ranjitha K. to know more about this topic.

Strategically placed openings such as windows and skylights are key in this architectural approach, allowing natural light to highlight textures and colours, thereby enhancing the indoor environment. The interplay of light and shadow creates a dynamic atmosphere that changes throughout the day, offering an aesthetically pleasing and functional living space. This technique reduces reliance on artificial lighting and fosters a sense of openness between indoor and outdoor areas. Furthermore, this approach encourages a deeper connection with nature, promoting a sense of tranquility and well-being.

In the project the preservation of existing green spaces was prioritised, with the home’s design wrapping around a central garden. This strategy not only ensures minimal disturbance to the site’s natural elements but also maximises natural light exposure. The inclusion of skylights further enhances the experience, with light illuminating key areas such as the puja room and study, designed to optimise their purpose and ambiance. The careful consideration of light placement ensures that each room is not only functional but also a serene retreat.

Ar. Naveen G.J. explains, “The design of this project encompasses preservation, synthesis, and harmonisation using the best of both worlds, light and shadow, nature and design.” This integration of natural light not only contributes to the aesthetic quality of the space but also supports emotional health, as exposure to sunlight can trigger the release of mood-enhancing neurotransmitters such as serotonin and endorphins. The overall design philosophy underscores the importance of creating spaces that nurture both the body and the mind, highlighting the transformative power of natural light in architectural design.
