Billionaire entrepreneur and tech mogul Elon Musk has announced the formation of a new political party in the US, named the America Party, in a post on his platform X on Saturday.
“Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom,” Musk wrote, referring to the results of a recent poll he conducted, which he claimed showed a 2-to-1 public desire for a new political alternative.
In his announcement, Musk criticised the current political system, stating, “When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste and graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy.”
During US Independence Day celebrations on July 4, Musk posted a poll on his platform X, asking followers: “Independence Day is the perfect time to ask if you want independence from the two-party (some would say uniparty) system! Should we create the America Party?”
The response was decisive as 65.4 per cent of users voted “Yes”, while 34.6 per cent voted “No.” Musk cited this strong support as the driving force behind the launch, framing it as a response to growing public dissatisfaction with both major parties.
Earlier, Musk hinted at the possibility of launching a third political party in the US after responding positively to a post on X that stated: “Elon starting a 3rd party is closely akin to Tesla & SpaceX. Low probability of success, but if successful, it will completely change the game.”
Musk’s new political party announcement comes shortly after his departure from the Trump administration and his exit from DOGE, marking a major realignment in his political and public roles.
Tensions between Musk and President Donald Trump have intensified in recent weeks, largely sparked by Trump’s sweeping new legislation, dubbed the “One Big Beautiful Bill”, which passed both houses of Congress on Thursday and drew sharp criticism from Musk.
