England wicketkeeper batter Jamie Smith etched his name in the record books with his magnificent innings of 184* against India on Day 3 of the second Test at Edgbaston, Birmingham. Smith registered the highest score by an England wicketkeeper in Tests surpassing Alec Stewart’s record of 173 against New Zealand in 1997.

Smith came to the crease with his team reeling at 84/5 in 21.4 overs after Mohammed Siraj dismissed Joe Root (22) and Ben Stokes (0) on consecutive deliveries. Facing a hat-trick ball, Smith got off the mark on his very first delivery as he drove Siraj down the ground for a boundary. He further collected his second boundary against Akash Deep and moved into double digits.

Both Smith and Harry Brook were extremely busy at the crease rotating the strike regularly and putting the bad deliveries away for a four. Smith got a move on in his innings as he took on Prasidh Krishna and nullified his short-ball strategy with his aggressive strokes. Smith whacked 23 runs in an over against Krishna, shifting the momentum in his team’s favour.

In no time, Smith moved from 25 to 49 and brought up his fifty off 43 balls. He continued to take on Krishna and didn’t spare the spin-twins Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja. Smith quickly outscored Brook and brought up his second Test hundred off 80 balls, the joint third fastest for England.
