In a twist that could leave even mathematicians scratching their heads, Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar Bihar University in Muzaffarpur managed to defy basic arithmetic.

In its recently declared postgraduate third-semester results (2023–25), the university awarded a student 257 marks in a 100-mark theory paper and 225 marks in a 30-mark practical exam. Yet, ironically, the student was not even promoted.

More than 100 students are also staring at pending results. Several of them allege that their college did not submit internal marks

Out of approximately 9,000 students who appeared for the exam, 8,000 were declared passed. However, students from the Hindi, English, and Science streams have raised concerns over repeated errors.

They claim the university has a history of declaring students to fail by 1–2 marks and dismissing objections with vague explanations involving the “head examiner”.

The university exam controller Professor Ram Kumar said, “It came to our notice that some students received marks exceeding the total. Upon investigation, it was found that the error occurred during Excel sheet entries while preparing the results. The discrepancies have been corrected. The computer operator has been strictly warned and instructed to thoroughly verify results before publication in the future,” he said.

Professor. Ram Kumar added, “The results are fed in Excel format, where occasional typing mistakes can occur. As soon as we received complaints, we conducted a prompt investigation and corrected the errors. Greater caution will be exercised in the future.”
