It was not Shefali Jariwala who first immortalized the song, ‘Kaanta Laga’. Long before the 2002 remix became a pop culture sensation, it was veteran actress Asha Parekh who originally stirred up a storm with the track in 1972, as part of the film Samadhi. The song’s popularity was such that it was even remade in Telugu as Nindu Manishi in 1978.
Asha Parekh on Kaanta Laga: “It was my good fortune the hit song came to me”
Shedding light on the origins of the now-iconic number, Asha Parekh shares, “It was part of the film Samadhi, in which Dharmendra and I co-starred. He had a double role — of both father and son. I was paired with the father, and Jaya Bachchan was with the son. It was my good fortune that this big hit song came to me.”
Recalling the energy of the original version, Asha Parekh describes Kaanta Laga as an upbeat folk-dance number composed by the legendary Rahul Dev Burman. “It was peppy and catchy. We were all humming the song while shooting it. But did I ever think it would become such a rage in hindsight? No! Success at that level cannot be predicted by anyone. I remember the song ‘Maar Diya Jaye Ke Chhod Diya Jaye’ in my film Mera Gaon Mera Desh — that too became such a craze, although Lataji’s other songs in the film were also outstanding.”
The veteran actress, often praised for her graceful dancing, added, “I loved dancing in my movies. And the audiences expected me to. I think Kaanta Laga was one of my most popular dance numbers.”
While Shefali Jariwala’s remix brought the song to a new generation, it was Asha Parekh’s original performance that laid the foundation for its enduring legacy.
