Shilpa Shetty is no stranger to reinvention. From being one of the most sought-after stars of the ’90s to becoming a wellness advocate, entrepreneur, and hands-on mother, her journey has spanned decades without losing relevance. In a recent interview with Femina, Shilpa opened up about the golden era of Bollywood, her selective approach to work, and the emotional weight of roles that changed her, both as an artist and as a woman.
Shilpa Shetty says, “the 90s were gold” for Bollywood for THIS reason!
Looking back at the 1990s, Shilpa doesn’t hesitate to call it her favorite chapter. “The ’90s were gold,” she said. The actress fondly recalled playing cards with co-stars until dawn, sharing biryani on location, and laughing freely without the anxiety of being captured by paparazzi. “We could live,” she said with wistful clarity.
However, Shilpa isn’t one to dwell in nostalgia without growth. Post-2000, her career took a decisively different path. While many of her contemporaries chased volume, she chose substance. “Depth over dilution,” she said, describing her approach to roles. Whether it was the shifting priority brought on by motherhood—first with son Viaan in 2012, and later with daughter Samisha in 2020 or her own evolving values, Shilpa made it a point to accept only those projects that made it “worthwhile to leave my kids behind.”
When asked about the characters that stayed with her long after the cameras stopped rolling, Phir Milenge stood out. Portraying an HIV-positive corporate lawyer was more than just another role; it became an emotional reckoning. “I would sit in my room after doing the scene… I burst out crying during a scene and I was inconsolable for a very long time. I just felt that pain.” Moved by the experience, she donated her earnings from the film to AIDS charities.
Shilpa’s multi-faceted drive – what she calls her “non-stop, next-thing energy”—is no accident. A proud Gemini, she says, “Why would I want to slow the Gemini down? I’m so happy and fortunate that I’m born as one and got two for free! I strive for perfection. I do not like mediocrity.”
