Before Aamir Khan became a household name with path-breaking performances and blockbuster hits, he was quietly learning the ropes behind the camera, not on film sets as a star, but as an assistant director. In a recent interview with Filmfare, the actor delved into his formative years, shedding light on the discipline and foresight that shaped his journey long before Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak introduced him to fame.
Aamir Khan recalls being shocked by lack of planning on sets of uncle Nasir Hussain-backed film Manzil Manzil: “I spent two weeks at the office, detailing every requirement”
Aamir revealed that joining the film industry wasn’t something his parents supported at first. “No, absolutely not. They didn’t want me in films in the first place,” he shared. Despite the lack of encouragement, his conviction remained unwavering, even when being a college dropout was frowned upon. “I’ve always been a bit of a Rancho, even before 3 Idiots existed,” he said with a grin.
Aamir began his journey on the sets of Manzil Manzil and Zabardast, films produced by his uncle, veteran filmmaker Nasir Hussain. Though many might assume his entry into films was cushioned by his lineage, Aamir’s experience was anything but casual. He recalled his first day vividly — asking the chief assistant director for the day’s paperwork, including location breakdowns, costumes, props, and actor availability. “He looked at me blankly: ‘We haven’t done all that,’” Aamir said. “I was stunned. For me, that kind of paperwork was a must.”
Rather than accepting the status quo, Aamir took it upon himself to bring structure. “After that schedule, I spent two weeks at the office, detailing every requirement scene by scene. No one else was doing it then, but to me, it was just common sense,” he said, underlining his innate sense of discipline and order.
This hands-on, detail-oriented approach proved invaluable. He recalled a moment when a major scene was nearly canceled due to the unavailability of actor Kulbhushan Kharbanda. But Aamir stepped in with a practical solution. “I explained we could shoot the scenes with a duplicate standing in for Kulbhushan (Kharbanda) ji, and once he was available, we’d just need two days to get his reverse angles. That approach only worked because we had the paperwork in place. It gave us the clarity to plan around problems.”
Speaking of the professional front, Aamir is currently seen in Sitaare Zameen Par. The RS Prasanna directorial was released on June 20.
