The film explores the intersection of faith, fear, and tradition, using the lens of mythological horror to examine how old legends and unresolved grief can shape entire communities. Set in a remote village, the narrative builds an eerie world where rituals, spirituality, and human resilience collide. The film has earned attention for its striking visual effects, atmospheric tension, and emotionally charged storytelling.

Jitin Gulati, who plays a police officer in the film, says the experience allowed him to explore sides of himself he hadn’t tapped into before. “I never knew I’d end up playing a police officer in a genre as layered and atmospheric as mythological horror. This film gave me the chance to do so many things for the first time; from donning the uniform to stepping into a story deeply rooted in our cultural lore,” Jitin shared.

He also highlighted the detailed preparation that went into portraying his character authentically. “While I made sure I did all the necessary research and prep that comes with playing a uniformed official, our script readings and rehearsals with Vishal sir and the writers were particularly helpful in finding the right tone for my character within the world of Maa,” he added.

Gulati’s portrayal of a grounded, duty-bound officer serves as an anchor amidst the film’s supernatural elements. His character navigates a space where rationality meets spiritual unease, adding depth to the film’s layered narrative.

Directed by Vishal Furia, known for films like Chhorii, Maa further expands the director’s exploration of horror rooted in Indian traditions. The film’s fresh approach to mythological horror and its focus on emotional storytelling has made it a notable addition to the genre.
