Four more deaths related to cardiovascular issues in Karnataka’s Hassan district in a single day, June 30, have raised grave concerns among locals and health authorities.

The disturbing surge in heart attacks among middle-aged individuals has pushed the death toll to 22 in just the last 40 days, painting a grim picture of an emerging health crisis in the region.

This disproportionate impact on younger and middle-aged adults has left the community shaken, prompting urgent calls for investigation and intervention.

The four individuals who died in Hassan due to cardiovascular issues on June 30 were:

    • Lepakshi (50), a resident of JP Nagar, who collapsed suddenly after complaining of fatigue.
    • Professor Muttayya (58), an English lecturer at the Government First Grade College, who died of a heart attack while having tea.
    • Kumar (57), a D-Group employee from Channarayapattana, who passed away after being hospitalized with chest pain the previous day.
    • Satyanarayana Rao (63), a resident of Rangolihalli Colony, who collapsed suddenly after experiencing chest discomfort.

What is particularly alarming about the current health crisis is the age profile of the victims. Of the 22 individuals who have died, five were aged between 19 and 25, while another eight were between 25 and 45—the age group that has seen the most shocking deaths in recent years.

Four of the 22 fatalities were between the ages of 45 and 58, while the remaining cases involved individuals above 60.

HEALTH FACILITIES WITNESS SURGE IN PATIENTS

The spike in cardiac cases has led to a surge in patients at Jayadeva Hospital in Bengaluru, a leading cardiac institute. Outpatient departments are reportedly overcrowded, with doctors noting an estimated 8% increase in footfall over the past two weeks—particularly from Hassan and surrounding districts. Many are opting for precautionary check-ups amid growing fears.

    LONG-TERM STATISTICS HIGHLIGHT PATTERN

According to the District Health and Family Welfare Department, Hassan has recorded 507 heart attack cases over the past two years, of which 190 were fatal. While cardiovascular ailments have long been a concern, the sudden rise in deaths among younger individuals marks a new and troubling trend.

The spotlight on cardiac-related deaths among the youth has intensified following the recent death of model and actor Shefali Jariwala, who suffered a cardiac arrest on June 27 at the age of just 42.

Before her, a 25-year-old man died after collapsing from a heart attack during a wedding ritual in Karnataka. A 28-year-old bodybuilder died of cardiac arrest while working out at a gym.

A 29-year-old dental surgeon also died of a heart attack after completing a marathon in Goa, and a 38-year-old gym trainer succumbed to cardiac arrest.

The rising trend of deaths linked to cardiovascular ailments has left both health experts and fitness enthusiasts across age groups deeply concerned.
