NEW DELHI: West Bengal police on Saturday detained Union minister and state BJP president Sukanta Majumdar while he was protesting against the alleged gangrape incident at South Calcutta Law College in Kolkata on June 25. A video of Majumdar has gone viral, where cops can be seen taking him from the protest site to a police bus. Majumdar said, “This is the face of democracy in West Bengal. Mamata Banerjee has ruined democracy in the state. The police have arrested me and other workers.”Earlier in the day Majumdar criticised Bengal government over back-to-back crimes being reported from educational institutions, including the recent RG Kar Medical College rape case.

He said that if the government cannot ensure a safe environment for students in the state, then it has no right to stay in power. While speaking to ANI, Majumdar said, “Both the incidents (recent and RG Kar rape case) happened inside an educational institution. Inability of the state government to stop these is a pathetic failure. Someone should take responsibility.”“You say police can’t be everywhere. It must be at least accepted that the government is not able to maintain an environment of safety, and with such failures, they have no right to stay in their post,” he added.
