Aditya Roy Kapur may not be particularly fond of film promotions, but he’s thoroughly enjoying the process for Metro… In Dino. The actor is relishing the opportunity to bond with his co-stars as they come together for Anurag Basu’s romantic drama.
Aditya Roy Kapur gets real about choosing films; says, “You have to tap into your own charm, keep it relevant, and still make it feel authentic”
In a chat with Mid-Day, when told that the film feels like a refreshing break from the action-packed movies currently ruling the box office, Kapur responded, “A lot of people have said that a film like this is releasing after a long time. When it comes to choosing projects, we usually focus on what’s right in front of us. You ask yourself: does this story resonate with me? Once a certain type of film succeeds, it sets off a chain reaction — that’s how the industry functions. Hopefully, people will connect with this film, and maybe we’ll see more such stories being told again.”
Metro… In Dino marks Aditya Roy Kapur’s second collaboration with director Anurag Basu, following their work together on Ludo (2020). Featuring an ensemble cast that includes Sara Ali Khan, Konkona Sensharma, Pankaj Tripathi, Neena Gupta, Anupam Kher, Fatima Sana Shaikh, and Ali Fazal, the film delves into the many facets of love.
When asked about playing the classic romantic lead, Kapur admitted that it’s more challenging than it appears. “People often underestimate how tricky it can be,” he said. “You have to tap into your own charm, keep it relevant, and still make it feel authentic. Ultimately, it comes down to the writing. I don’t think Anurag sir would ever create something that lacks heart.”
Over time, Kapur said he and Basu have built a strong creative rapport. “Dada and I have developed a shorthand—there’s an instinctive understanding of what he’s looking for. He encourages his actors to take risks and never judges if something doesn’t quite work. He also thrives on spontaneity—he might rewrite a line, adjust a scene, or completely shift the tone. Being on his set has taught me that sometimes, the takes where you feel least confident turn out to be the most powerful,” he said.
Actors often hesitate to sign on for ensemble films, with filmmaker Rohit Shetty even remarking that many stars today are too ego-driven to share the spotlight. But Aditya Roy Kapur isn’t one of them. “For me, it’s about not turning down a good opportunity,” he said. “When Dada spoke to me about this new story, it sounded exciting. I wasn’t going to reject it over something as arbitrary as screen space or some strategic move.”
Reflecting on his journey, Kapur added, “I began my career with supporting roles. In my first film, London Dreams (2009), I had a small part. I’m content with the path I’ve taken.”
