Scotch & Soda will launch a new collection featuring the artwork of American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat this coming spring.
Basquiat lived and worked in New York City where he became the face of the neo-expressionism movement. He was known for his edgy and raw works that combined powerful imagery, text and symbolism.
The collection will highlight Basquiat’s bold, abstract images on a collection of men’s, women’s and children’s apparel that will include symbols, words, Breton stripes and denim treatments on graphic T-shirts, oversize bomber jackets, jeans, cardigans and other products.
“Basquiat’s art is bold, distinct and unconventional — just like our brand ethos,” said Joey Gabbay, chief executive officer of Bluestar Alliance, Scotch & Soda’s parent company. “This collection celebrates his legacy by translating his masterpieces through the lens of Scotch & Soda’s optimistic, free-spirited principles into statement-making, wearable art that speaks to a new generation of creatives and visionaries.”
Basquiat, who was of Haitian and Puerto Rican descent, died in 1988 at the age of 27 of a heroin overdose. Before his career as a painter began, he was part of a graffiti duo named SAMO with Al Diaz that left tags all over Manhattan, notably on the Lower East Side. By the early 1980s, his paintings had gained recognition and were being exhibited in galleries and museums globally.
Bluestar Alliance was founded in 2006 by Gabbay and Ralph Gindi and is a global brand management company with a portfolio that includes Off-White, Palm Angels, Elie Tahari and others. It acquired the Amsterdam-based Scotch & Soda in March 2023.
