Jordan Brand has given the requisite attention to the Air Jordan 1 in 2025, celebrating the 40th anniversary of the shoe that brought the billion-dollar enterprise into existence. Still, the future remains just as essential, and the next step has been taken with the introduction of the Air Jordan 40.

The 40th iteration in Michael Jordan‘s namesake franchise is the first shoe from anywhere under the Nike umbrella to make use of both full-length ZoomX foam and a full-length Zoom Strobel. Known best for its use in Nike’s top running sneakers, ZoomX offers a brand-best 85 percent energy return. The foam works in conjunction underfoot with the Zoom air bag to offer even greater responsiveness and explosive pops of movement. Down further, a new traction pattern utilizes 40-degree angles to help players start and stop quickly.

A premium leather upper harkens back to earlier basketball sneakers but belies 360 degrees of webbing for containment underneath. The appearance is also loaded with details directly influenced by seven different Air Jordan models called out in a press release.

The Air Jordan 40’s tongue borrows from the Air Jordan 5, while the heel clip and eyelets reference the Air Jordan 3 — the former detailing also bringing the first “Nike Air” branding appearance since the Air Jordan 6. Reflectivity is drawn from the Air Jordan 13, bone-line stitching comes from the Air Jordan 14, and an iridescent window channels the Air Jordan 18. From the Air Jordan 15 comes microwebbing with Jordan’s signature, and the Air Jordan 12 provides the toe’s Jumpman.

“This is the definitive performance basketball shoe on the market,” Jason Mayden, chief design officer for Jordan Brand, said in a press release. “For the first time, we’ve combined two landmark Nike, Inc. innovations to create the Air Jordan of the future. And we wouldn’t be Jordan Brand is we weren’t also obsessing the intersection of style and performance. This shoe helps you get buckets and look good while doing it. It perfectly embodies the essence of effortless versatility.”

Paolo Banchero, whose become the lead face for Air Jordans in the NBA, added: “I can’t wait to take the court in the Air Jordan 40 this season. It’s truly a shoe built for today’s style of basketball, with the innovative edge that comes from being a member of the Jordan Family. That attention to performance will take my game to the next level as I continue to proudly represent the Jumpman, the ultimate symbol of greatness.”

The Air Jordan 30 in its “The Classic” launch colorway will release July 12 through Jordan Brand’s website and select third-party retailers, followed by the “Blue Suede” edition Aug. 20 and “Dusty Rose” Sept. 20. Six more unnamed colorways are slated with unique materials applied to the upper. Pricing is set at $200.
