The actor has been outspoken about trans rights in the past, and his sister Lux is also trans. So when the Harry Potter author took to Twitter in April to celebrate the UK Supreme Court’s decision essentially ruling that trans women aren’t legally women, Pedro had some strong words for her reaction.
When activist Tariq Ra’ouf, said in an Instagram video, “It has become our mission as the general public to make sure that every single thing that’s Harry Potter related fails…because that awful disgusting shit, that has consequences,” Pedro “liked” the video and replied in the comments, “Awful disgusting SHIT is exactly right. Heinous LOSER behavior.”
In a new Vanity Fair profile, Pedro opened up about his decision to speak out publicly against J.K.’s behavior, and his response was about as refreshing as it gets.
In the interview, Pedro said that the response to his comment made him feel like “that kid that got sent to the principal’s office a lot for behavioral issues in public schools in Texas feeling scared and thinking, ‘What’d I do?’”
“The one thing that I would say I agonized over a little bit was just, ‘Am I helping? Am I fucking helping?’” he added. “It’s a situation that deserves the utmost elegance so that something can actually happen, and people will actually be protected.”
“Listen, I want to protect the people I love. But it goes beyond that. Bullies make me fucking sick.”
Lux also defended her brother’s comment in the profile: “But it is heinous loser behavior,” she said. “And he said that as the older brother to someone saying that our little sister doesn’t exist.”
