Raj Babbar has been one of the most popular stars in India who earned respect for his performances in films like Hum Paanch, Insaaf Ka Tarazu, Agar Tum Na Hote, Bodyguard and more. But, amid that, his personal life had its fair share of controversies. Whether he decided to tie the knot with Smita Patil while still being married to Nadira Babbar with two kids or his strained bond with his and Smita’s son, Prateik, everything made headlines. Now, after years, his eldest son, Aarya, recently shared his views on his father’s choice to marry again and their bond over the years.
Aarya Babbar shares his feelings on his father’s second marriage
Raj Babbar is celebrating his birthday on June 23, 2025. On a special occasion, his son, Aarya Babbar, sat down for a conversation with the Times Of India to share some insights about his father and their bond. He shared that he was about five or six years old when he realised the extent of his father’s popularity after watching him more on TV than in-person. He mentioned that their father used to work tirelessly around the clock to ensure that his family and kids could lead a comfortable life in the ’80s and ’90s. Aarya said:
“You know, at that time, our industry ran on the perception that the number of films you do will decide your success rate. So my father was not perhaps there at home as I was growing up because he was so busy giving us a lifestyle and giving us the life that perhaps he wanted to give us as a father, and which he did.”
Aarya was also asked about his father’s second marriage to Smita Patil, which created quite a buzz. For those unaware, Raj fell in love with Smita while shooting a film with her in 1982. As their bond deepened, he left his first wife, Nadira, despite having two kids, to marry her in 1983. However, Smita died shortly after childbirth in 1986. Aarya and his sister, Juhi, were young at that time, and the significant change wasn’t easy. But, over time, they have gotten over it. In Aarya’s words:
“It’s a part of our life, and that is how we look at it. You know, I think all of us, especially me, I think I’ve grown up from that entire thing. It was long back, and today we look at the positives of it, and that’s it.”

In the same conversation, Aarya shared that Raj Babbar is more than just a parent to him. He is a friend, inspiration and a guide for him. At the same time, the veteran actor’s ability to look after his responsibilities and the dignity he carries for himself have inspired Aarya. He has been impressed to the point that at the age of 44, he shares the closest bond with his dad. The actor-comedian said:
“I think that at this junction of my life, I’m the closest to my father. My mother won’t be too happy hearing this, but I think I’m the closest to my father. I know I will get the right advice, and I can blindly trust him for anything; I know this man is always going to stand by me, and perhaps I give him that same emotion that I’m standing with him as a son, no matter what.”
