    CUDDALORE: A 25-year-old man in Tamil Nadu‘s Cuddalore district accused of raping an 80-year-old woman attacked cops when they went to arrest him on Tuesday, but was shot in the leg. He is undergoing treatment.Police said that they were forced to open fire as the accused, S Sundaravelu, of SK Palayam near Panruti, attempted to flee after attacking cops with a knife.Cops said the octogenarian had gone out to attend nature’s call in a village Monday afternoon when Sundaravelu raped her. He also stole her gold earrings and nose ring, police said. Passersby found the woman lying unconscious at a casuarina grove and alerted her relatives. She was admitted to a hospital in Chidambaram.Police said that they identified the accused from CCTV footage collected from the locality. Subsequently, they received a tip-off that accused Sundaravelu was hiding in a cashew nut grove near a dysfunctional distillery, and went to arrest him.
