Actor Shahid Kapoor took his fans down memory lane on June 17, 2025, by sharing a powerful monochrome throwback photo of his heavily tattooed back from his Udta Punjab days. The post marked nine years since the release of the cult film, in which he played the unhinged and unforgettable character Tommy Singh — a drug-addicted rockstar whose chaotic life became symbolic of the film’s raw narrative.

The caption accompanying the photo read: “9 yrs. Another special character. Another one of the flawed protagonists that I always loved to play. They seem to be in fashion now. Kapoor’s tribute didn’t just stir nostalgia among fans — it also sparked a playful moment in the comments section. His wife, Mira Rajput, responded with a witty “Tommy calling.”
Directed by Abhishek Chaubey and co-produced by Anurag Kashyap, Udta Punjab (2016) explored the drug crisis in Punjab through a gritty, multi-narrative lens. Shahid’s portrayal of Tommy Singh stood out for its manic energy and physical transformation, complete with long hair, tattoos, and a tormented personality that masked his vulnerability.
Having said that, it is worth mentioning here that Udta Punjab 2 is in the works. If a report by Peeping Moon is something to go by, then producer Ektaa Kapoor has brought on Aakash Kaushik to write and direct the sequel. The report stated that the film is currently in the writing phase, with production expected to begin next year. However, there is no official announcement of the same.
Coming back to Shahid, he was last seen in Deva, directed by Rosshan Andrrew. The film underperformed at the box office. He is currently busy with the untitled Vishal Bhardwaj directorial, which is said to be based on the life of gangster Hussain Ustara, who is known for his rivalry against Dawood Ibrahim.
