A case of fake compassionate appointments has come to light in Madhya Pradesh’s Rewa district, where individuals allegedly secured government jobs in the Education Department using forged documents. The matter surfaced amid an ongoing probe into the constable recruitment scam in the state.

Acting on preliminary findings, police have registered an FIR and initiated a search for the accused. The fraud came to light when the district education office summoned all individuals appointed on compassionate grounds in the past year for document verification.

Out of the 36 people appointed under this category, 10 failed to appear. Upon examining their documents, officials found that at least six appointments were based on forged paperwork. All these cases occurred within just one year, raising questions about the recruitment procedures.

District Education Officer Sudama Lal Gupta, during an internal audit of appointments made during his tenure, uncovered the irregularities. He found that six appointment orders bearing his signature were forged. While he himself is under scrutiny due to the misuse of his name and signature, Gupta filed a formal complaint at the Civil Lines police station, prompting a police investigation into the matter.

According to the district administration, the fraud involved serious manipulation of official procedures. As per the rules, applications for compassionate appointments must be submitted online through the Sankul portal, followed by a hard copy signed by the Sankul in-charge. However, in these cases, the proper process was bypassed.

Rewa District Collector Pratibha Pal said the first red flag was raised when one of the appointees repeatedly remained absent from work. Further investigation revealed that four to five more appointments were made using dubious documents. A committee probe confirmed that several individuals had misrepresented facts and submitted forged papers to secure the job.

Based on these findings, an FIR has been filed against six individuals. Rewa’s Additional Superintendent of Police, Arti Singh, confirmed that the appointments made between December 9, 2024, and April 4, 2025, included several fraudulent entries for peon positions. An FIR has been registered at the Civil Lines police station under IPC section 420 against five individuals – Hiramani Rawat, Omprakash Kol, Sushma Kol, Vinay Rawat, and Rama Dwivedi (currently serving as a clerk).

Apart from the beneficiaries, proposals for disciplinary action have also been sent to the higher authorities against the nodal officer and district education officer for their potential negligence or involvement in facilitating the fake appointments. The case has now triggered a wider enquiry, with the possibility of more fake appointments being uncovered in the coming days.
