Veteran actress Aruna Irani recently revisited a memorable moment from the iconic 1973 film Bobby, which marked the acting debut of late actor Rishi Kapoor. In a candid conversation with Lehren Retro, the actress revealed her initial discomfort with a scene that was considered bold for its time, one where Kapoor’s character appears nude while drying his hair.
Aruna Irani recalls feeling “shy” about Rishi Kapoor’s nude scene in Bobby: “Chintu ji said, ‘You objected a lot in that scene, but nanga toh mujhe hona tha’”
Directed by the legendary Raj Kapoor, Bobby broke ground in many ways — from its youthful romantic narrative to its bold visuals. One such scene featured Rishi Kapoor walking out of a bathroom unclothed, a moment that Irani initially refused to shoot due to feeling “shy.”
“I had said no initially. He comes out nude and dries out his hair with a towel. He gave that shot. I told Raj ji that I can’t do it,” Irani recalled. The director, who was also Rishi Kapoor’s father, reportedly tried to ease her discomfort. “He said, ‘Don’t look there naa, don’t see wrong things, see right things.’ I did it at last,” she said.
Years later, while working with Kapoor again on a different project, the actor humorously brought up the incident. “Chintu ji said, ‘Aruna ji, mujhe aapse ek baat poochni hai. You objected a lot in that scene, but nanga toh mujhe hona tha, aap kyun object kar rahe the?’” Irani remembered with a smile.
The actress admitted that Kapoor had a valid point. “I told him that I was feeling shy… but he was actually right,” she reflected.
Bobby starred Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia in lead roles and is remembered as a defining film in the history of Hindi cinema. Its portrayal of young love across class boundaries, catchy soundtrack, and youthful energy made it an instant classic. Alongside Irani, the film featured notable performances from actors like Farida Jalal, Pran, Prem Nath, Prem Chopra, Jagdish Raj, and Durga Khote.
