Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan are one of the most evergreen couples in the B-town. Earlier in 2025, the couple celebrated their 18-year marriage anniversary. For the unversed, the duo tied the knot in 2007. While the couple’s marriage was a hush-hush event, a not so known fact surrounding their love story, was once shared by Bollywood superstar, Amitabh Bachchan. In a past interview, Big B shared how Abhishek called him to inform him that he had proposed to Aishwarya for marriage. It happened right after the premiere of Mani Ratnam’s Guru, starring Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in lead roles.
When Amitabh Bachchan welcomed Aishwarya after Abhishek proposed her for marriage
Once, in an interview, Amitabh Bachchan recalled the moment when Abhishek called and informed him that he had proposed to Aishwarya for marriage. Big B disclosed how the duo has been fond of each other. He also shared that after Abhishek told him about his marriage proposal to Aishwarya, he brought the couple home. Big B also recalled the moment when he had a heartfelt conversation with his daughter-in-law, Aishwarya. In his words:
“Abhishek and Aishwarya are fond of each other. In New York, after the premiere of Guru, Abhishek called me and said that he proposed to her. I said, ‘Come on home.’ I asked Aishwarya if she was happy. She said yes. I picked them up and took her home. I told her, this is your home. Humko kya lena dena hai aur kuch se?”

Abhishek and Aishwarya have shared the screen space many times in their acting career, including Dhaai Aksar Prem Ke, Kuch Naa Kaho, Guru, Raavan, and Dhoom 2. It was Dhaai Akshar Prem Ke, where the duo appeared as a lead pair for the first time. The two started off as friends. However, it was during the shoot of JP Dutta’s, Umraao Jaan that the friendship turned into love. According to a report by Times Entertainment, in a 2010 interview, Aishwarya disclosed how Abhishek proposed to her with a ring that was used in their film, Guru’s shoot. She was quoted as saying:
“He is original and real, like our relationship. There is nothing predictable or boring about our life. We nurture each other. The gesture was spontaneous and meaningful. God has been kind to us. We can certainly afford those standard rocks. But do we need them.”
It was the premiere of their film, Guru, when Abhishek proposed to Aishwarya for marriage. The couple tied the knot on April 20, 2007, in a private yet grand ceremony. After their wedding, in an old interview with Oprah Winfrey, Abhishek revealed that while he was shooting in New York for a movie, he would often stand on the balcony of his hotel room and wish that one day, it would be nice to start a life with Aishwarya Rai. Years later, when the two were in New York for the premiere of their film, Guru, he took her to that same balcony after the event and proposed to her. Later in 2011, the couple welcomed their first child, a daughter, Aaradhya.
