Tarun Mansukhani’s Dostana, released in 2008, is considered one of the best rom-coms in Bollywood ever. From chartbuster songs to the trio of Priyanka Chopra, Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham, and their quirky jokes, everything became the talk of the town. However, despite such a big success, Tarun Mansukhani who wrote and directed the film, didn’t make any new film for 10 years. He made a comeback with the 2019 film, Drive and in a recent interview, Tarun Mansukhani opened up about the reason for his absence.
Tarun Mansukhani reveals he had an unpleasant divorce
Tarun Mansukhani doesn’t often open up about the main reason why he went off the radar after Dostana’s success. However, in a recent interview with Just Too Filmy, the Housefull 5 director finally shared that he was away from work due to some challenges he faced in his personal life. The filmmaker revealed that he had an ugly divorce with his ex-wife, Karuna, which had occupied his mind, and he was not in the right headspace to make a film. In his words:
“A lot happened in life. I went through a divorce. It wasn’t a pleasant one. It was an expensive one for me, and life just took its turns. I was not in a bandwidth or headspace to make a film.”
Tarun mentioned that a key thing he remembered from that time was that he was going through a difficult phase, both emotionally and financially. He was in debt, but he didn’t want to make a film just to earn money and solve that problem. The filmmaker felt that if he made a movie just out of desperation or fear, it won’t come out from a genuine creative process. Sharing his opinion, Tarun said:
“What I knew about that point in time is that I am in debt, and I don’t need to sort that out. I didn’t want to make a film, and I’d make money or get paid for it. The moment I do that, it is tainted by that because I am making a film in fear. I am not going to have fun on that set either.”

When Tarun Mansukhani made a film after a 10 year long break, Drive, backed by Karan Johar, it didn’t work well. Starring Sushant Singh Rajput and Jacqueline Fernandez, it received criticism for poor CGI, dubbing and performances. Some media reports claimed even Karan wasn’t happy with it and decided to release it on OTT and not in theatres. Reacting to the same, Tarun mentioned that he stands by the film, and he recalled SRK’s advice where he mentioned that among other hits, a film which doesn’t work often becomes a favourite where the actor or director wants to hold on to it.

Tarun Mansukhani tied the knot with his childhood sweetheart, Karuna, and after 9 years, they decided to part ways.
