Captain Sumeet Sabharwal was the key figure of the Air India flight that crashed after taking off from Ahmedabad International Airport for London on June 12, 2025. All the dreams of the 241 passengers on board crashed in 38 seconds, including those of Captain Sumeet and second officer Clive Kunder. The nation is grieving the loss of all their lives, and now actor Ajay Singh Chaudhary shared how Captain Sumeet was his neighbour for 12 years and revealed the state of his old father.
Ajay Singh Chaudhary reveals that Captain Sumeet Sabharwal’s father is bereaved
Ajay, in an interview with the Hindustan Times, shared that Captain Sumeet, the co-pilot, was an ever-smiling and lively human being. Ajay was shooting for one of his TV shows when he learned that Pilot Sumeet was on a crashed flight, and Ajay’s world broke down. He could not believe that such a thing could take place with Capt Sumeet. Ajay shared that he had no courage to visit Captain Sumeet’s father, who is broken beyond repair. During an interview with the Hindustan Times, Ajay shared:
“There was a profound silence in their home without Sumeet’s presence. Log aa rahe hain, jaa rahe hain, phir bhi sab khamosh hai. It’s difficult to talk to his father as he cries and then sits looking in the void. Thankfully the captain’s sister and her kids are with him. Our [housing] society has families from the forces. It’s like one big family, and we will stand by him. But nothing makes up for his loss.”
Ajay also revealed that a few days before the Ahmedabad plane crash, Captain Sumeet’s mom met him during a morning stroll in Mumbai. She is a part of a yoga group. He had told his mom that he would be flying to Ahmedabad and then to London.
Who was Captain Sumeet Sabharwal?
Captain Sumeet Sabharwal was a senior Air India pilot who had three decades of flying experience and was among those who passed away in the Ahmedabad plane crash. Before he took off, Sabharwal reportedly had called his family and had told them that he would call after he landed in London. Captain Sabharwal had more than 8,200 hours of flying, according to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation. However, his colleagues believed that he had more flying experience, and the digital system of DGCA may not have shown his full career history.
What happened to Air India flight AI171?
According to a report by the Hindustan Times, the Air India Boeing aircraft had 242 people on board and it crashed post takeoff on June 12, 2025. There were around 169 Indians, 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese, along one Canadian. Thick smoke rose from the Dharpur area located in Meghaninagar, where the aircraft crashed. The flight crash had one survivor, Vishwashkumar Ramesh, who was seated in 11 A and escaped death as he jumped from the plane just moments before it exploded. Air India had confirmed the crash by releasing a statement on X, formerly Twitter, that read:
“Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad-London Gatwick, was involved in an incident today, 12 June 2025.”
Reportedly, Captain Sumeet Sabharwal had given a ‘mayday’ distress signal from the cockpit right after the takeoff, moments after the aircraft swiftly disappeared from the radar. Captain Sumeet’s family mourns as he left an imprint and was a kind, grounded and generous soul.
