Police Reacts to Malavika Mohanan’s Disturbing Incident In Local Train

In a detailed post on X, Mumbai Police addressed Malavika directly: “Ms @MalavikaM_ — We came across an article in an online portal of a newspaper, in which you shared your experience and raised concerns over women’s safety in the city. We can imagine that experiences like these can be startling and leave a long-term impact. Thus, we must reiterate that no matter what time of day or place in the city, please reach out to us at 112/100 and we will provide support as soon as we can. Non‑reporting emboldens the offender.”

The force reminded citizens that once an incident is reported, “the offender will be suitably & lawfully dealt with,” and encouraged women to use their influence to spread awareness, insisting that such aberrations cannot be generalized to Mumbai as a whole. Reinforcing the city’s track record, the post stated: “Mumbai city has always been safe for women and we will leave no stone unturned to make it better.”

Malavika’s Account: “Ek Chumma Degi Kya?”

In her interview with Hauterrfly, Malavika described the incident: one evening around 9:30 PM, she and two friends were sitting by the window grills of a slow local train when a man approached and asked, Ek chumma degi kya?” (“Will you give me a kiss?”). “We froze… We were just three young girls, completely vulnerable,” she recalled, challenging the common perception that “Mumbai is safe for women.”
