NEW DELHI: Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Sunday took a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as he embarked on his three-nation visit to Cyprus, Canada, and Croatia. In a post on social media platform X, Ramesh mocked PM Modi’s supporters of previously claiming he would refuse a G7 invitation even if offered, when it appeared Canada was hesitant to extend one. “When it appeared that Canada was dragging its feet on the invite to India, Mr Modi’s drumbeaters proclaimed that he would not go even if invited. But like always, he stands exposed”He recalled PM’s earlier remarks comparing India-Canada ties to the algebraic formula (a+b)², saying, “There was a time when he boasted about his knowledge of algebra by spouting the (a+b)² equation as applicable to India and Canada. But things went horribly wrong thereafter.”The Congress leader further criticised Modi’s foreign tour count, saying that this marks his 35th overseas trip since May 2023, yet the PM has not visited or met anyone from Manipur.“He has met with nobody from the state, let alone political leaders, since May 3, 2023. Pathetic of the PM to treat Manipur in this awful manner,” he said.Further taking aim at Modi’s G7 participation, Ramesh noted that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney had invited India as the world’s fifth-largest economy. “Perhaps Mr. Modi can remind him that according to the NITI Aayog CEO, India became the world’s third-largest economy on May 24, 2025,” he added.Meanwhile, PM Modi departed for Cyprus on Sunday, kicking off his three-nation diplomatic tour.In a departure statement, the Prime Minister said the visit would “build upon historical bonds and expand our ties in areas of trade, investment, security, technology, and promote people-to-people exchanges.”He is scheduled to attend the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada, from June 16–17, followed by a visit to Croatia on June 18, the first-ever by an Indian prime minister. There, he will meet President Zoran Milanović and Prime Minister Andrej Plenković to explore new areas of cooperation.
