Delhi received much-needed rain on Sunday, bringing relief from the ongoing heatwave. Several parts of the city saw rainfall, strong winds, and thunderstorms, which helped cool down the temperature and improve the air quality. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had warned of strong winds and thunderstorms in the city and advised people to stay indoors for safety.According to the IMD, heavy rain and storms hit Delhi early in the morning, with wind speeds reaching between 80 and 100 kmph. Areas like Krishi Bhavan, Rafi Marg, and Udyog Bhawan saw heavy rain and strong winds. At Safdarjung, two powerful windstorms (called thundersqualls) were recorded. The first had wind speeds of 82 kmph, and the second reached 104 kmph. The weather department asked people to avoid going out unless necessary, as strong winds and flying debris made roads dangerous. The heavy rain also caused traffic problems and waterlogging in low-lying areas. Before the rain, Delhi was facing extremely high temperatures. On Thursday, parts of the city recorded maximum temperatures above 43°C. Ayanagar was the hottest at 45.0°C. Other hot spots included Palam (44.5°C), Ridge (43.6°C), Lodhi Road (43.4°C), and Safdarjung (43.3°C).Earlier in the week, the IMD had warned that Delhi could face heatwave conditions, with temperatures possibly crossing 45°C. Sunday’s rain, however, provided a welcome break from the scorching heat.
