EXCLUSIVE : Metro… In Dino actor Rohan Gurbaxani on working with Anurag Basu: “It was a very unique experience because dada doesn’t work with a script”

Metro… In Dino brings together a strong ensemble cast. Can you tell us about your role and how it fits into the larger story?
I would say, in brief, that I’m part of the Konkona Sen Sharma and Pankaj Tripathi track. I play an IT professional who has transitioned into a painter, now living in Goa. There, I paint, sell my artwork, and hold exhibitions. This is where my track begins — and where my character meets Konkona’s character.

What was your first reaction when you were approached for Metro… In Dino?
I was over the moon because I knew what Life in a… Metro was and how amazing that film had been. And of course, Anurag Basu sir is someone who never fails to deliver an entertaining film — one that’s deeply rooted in our culture and crafted so artistically, especially through music and rhythm. So, to get a call saying, ‘Dada wants you to be a part of this film,’ was truly a beautiful feeling. Honestly, it felt like a blessing.

Anurag Basu is known for his unique storytelling. How was it working under his direction?
I think it was a very unique experience because Dada doesn’t work with a script. I’ve come from projects where I had a full script — I knew exactly what I was going to say on the day of the shoot. But with Dada, there’s no script. You arrive on set not knowing your lines for the day. That kind of trust — and a little bit of fear — is actually quite powerful, because it forces you to let go of old habits you’ve built as an actor. You’re almost compelled to develop new ones in response to the moment, and that’s an amazing thing. In any facet of life, if you get too comfortable or complacent, you’re not growing. And with him, you’re constantly evolving as an artist.

The film is said to explore modern-day relationships. How does your character reflect that theme?
Modern day, future day, past day — I don’t know what the difference is (laughs) — but I’d say the film reflects the kind of relationships we experience in our everyday lives. Every relationship has its own friction, complications, highs, and lows. At the end of the day, it’s all about being truthful and honest with one another.

You’re part of a cast that includes some seasoned actors. What was it like sharing screen space with them?
I think I have the best co-actors ever — two actors I’ve grown up watching and whose work I’ve respected for a long, long time. I truly feel it’s a blessing for any actor to work alongside co-actors who bring not only immense experience but also deep truthfulness to their performances. In every shot, you see a certain honesty that you can bounce off of in the scene. That’s a very special thing to have, because there are times in acting when you may not get much from the other person — and in those moments, you have to create something yourself to keep it real. But when you have a co-actor who brings such depth to their character, I’d say half your job is already done — you just have to react truthfully. Both Pankaj Tripathi sir and Konkona Sen Sharma, as we all know, have such incredible depth and artistry in their performances.

How do you personally relate to the themes explored in the film?
I think, similar to Kho Gaye Hum Kahan, this film is set in the modern day. And because I’m at a certain stage in life, I find myself able to relate to the kinds of relationships, characters, and conflicts shown in the film. Dada has a way of highlighting the very human elements in all his characters — and I think that’s why his films resonate so well. Audiences can always find a part of themselves in at least one of the characters. This film has ten characters, each with their own journey, and I’m sure viewers will be able to connect with at least one of them.

How was it acting with Ananya Panday in Kho Gaye Hum Kahan?
That was two years ago, but as we can all see, she’s been consistently growing and improving with every project. From Kho Gaye Hum Kahan to everything she’s done since, her work has been widely appreciated — and that’s a true testament to how hardworking and talented she is. That’s something I personally witnessed while working with her, especially in a role where everyone felt she truly excelled. Watching that unfold in front of me was a special experience, because when someone is cast so perfectly, it feels like the character is flowing through them — and I genuinely felt that with her.

As there is a long list of cast members in Metro… In Dino, did you ever feel you might get overshadowed by them?
No, I never feel that way, because I believe that if I come prepared, know my job, and give it my best, then all I need to do on set is engage and play with the other actors. I never look at it in terms of — will they outshine me? Will they have better dialogues than me? None of that matters. It’s all shared. That’s the truth. You can’t look at art as a game where I score more points than you — it’s about how we both win together.
