Aamir Khan, recently landed himself in a major controversy, ahead of the release of his upcoming film, Sitaare Zameen Par. He faced a lot of backlash when he revealed that he turned down one of the most loved films of 2004, Swades, by calling it dull and boring. The film, Swades was loved by many and later, the film became a defining role in Shah Rukh Khan’s career. A lot of fans defended the film, Swades, because of which Aamir Khan faced a lot of criticism, which can even reflect on his upcoming film.
Aamir Khan’s statement of rejecting Swades
While promoting his upcoming film, Sitaare Zameen Par in an interview with Zoom, Aamir Khan shared the reason behind turning down Swades, which eventually starred Shah Rukh Khan. He revealed that Ashutosh Gowariker had narrated the script to him during the shooting of Lagaan when the project was still titled, Kaveri Amma and he had liked it at that time. But, post the release of Lagaan, when Ashutosh gave him a detailed three-hour narration, Aamir Khan appreciated the thought but found the narration boring. He said:
“Why I said no to Swades? Mujhe bohot boring lagi thi. Actually maine abhi tak film dekhi nahi hai, Swades. Toh shayad usne correct kiya hoga, achhi bani hogi, I don’t know. Aur logo ko Shah Rukh ka kaam khaas pasand aaya tha usme, maine yeh note kiya tha.”
Public reaction on Aamir Khan’s statement
Aamir Khan’s statement about finding Swades boring triggered a lot of backlash online, especially from Shah Rukh Khan fans who consider the film a classic. Many people on Reddit questioned his judgment, with one user sarcastically commenting, “Kyunki script original thi?” One user said, “This guy continues to be such a jealous cookie”, while another user added humour and said, “Interview is temporary, maine dekhi nhi hai movie is permanent”. One user also commented, “If Swades is boring, then what about Thugs of Hindostan?” A few users also related this statement with his never-ending feud with Shah Rukh Khan, saying “Here we go again….Mamu and his never ending one sided feud with SRK!”
But, he didn’t just hate, there were a lot of users who came in support of him saying that he was talking about the script and the narration. One user said, “He said he found the Swades script boring not movie”, another user said, “To be fair it was very boring.” One user also commented, “I agree with him for once.”
