Actor Aamir Khan might be known for his perfectionism and discipline, but in a candid chat with Mashable India, the superstar peeled back the curtain on a much more vulnerable side of himself, one that includes alcohol-induced memory loss, battles with depression, and a journey toward sobriety.
Aamir Khan recalls getting drunk at his 60th birthday, forgetting the entire night: “I conducted myself normally.”
Currently promoting his upcoming film Sitaare Zameen Par, the 60-year-old actor reflected on his milestone birthday celebration. But despite the grand gesture made by his loved ones, he admitted to not remembering any of it. “My family threw a party for me on my 60th, and invited all my close friends. It was supposed to be a memorable night. And it was… just not for me,” Aamir said with a laugh, recalling how peer pressure and celebration led him to break his near-zero alcohol consumption rule.
He continued, “I don’t usually drink anymore, but that day I thought, ‘Why not?’ I’m not someone who restricts himself; I go all in. And since I hadn’t been drinking lately, it hit me harder. We started around 7 pm, and by 9, I was buzzing.”
Aamir admitted to experiencing a complete blackout. Though friends shared photos and told him about heartfelt speeches and fun moments, he said he remembered none of it. “I conducted myself normally, I responded to what people were saying, but when I woke up the next day, it was all wiped out. It was scary.”
This wasn’t the first time the actor has opened up about his relationship with alcohol. In an earlier conversation with Nana Patekar, Aamir had shared that he once spiraled into self-destructive behavior following his divorce from his first wife, Reena Dutta.
Coming back to the professional front, as mentioned above, Aamir is currently busy promoting Sitaare Zameen Par. The film is slated to release on June 20.
