Indian businessman, Sunjay Kapur has passed away suddenly in the UK after reportedly suffering a heart attack while playing Polo. The news has sent shockwaves across the business and entertainment world. Known for being the Chairman of Sona Comstar and the ex-husband of Bollywood actress, Karisma Kapoor, Sunjay’s life was filled with achievements, relationships with high-profile personalities and some personal struggles.
His unexpected death was confirmed by his close acquaintance and author, Sushel Seth, on X. While none of his family members have made any comment on it, here’s everything you might want to know about Sunjay Kapur.
Sunjay Kapur had a privileged childhood and a powerful education
Sunjay Kapur was the son of Rani Kapur and the late Surinder Kapur, who was a pioneer in the field of India’s auto component industry. He founded Sona Group which manufactured automotive components in India. From a young age, he was expected to take on a leadership role one day. The businessman pursued his early education at The Doon School in Dehradun and The Cathedral and John Connon School in Mumbai before stepping out to pursue higher studies abroad.
He earned a BBA in Corporate Strategy and HR from London and studied prestigious executive programs at MIT and Harvard Business School. In 2003, Sunjay joined his father’s company and played a significant role in helping it become a major player in the global automotive space. Later, also served as a member on the Board of Governors at The Doon School.
Sunjay Kapoor’s personal life was filled with high-profile relationships and controversies
Sunjay Kapur found success in the world of his business, but it was his personal life which grabbed the spotlight. He married thrice, first he was married to Mumbai-based fashion designer, Nandita Mahtani. They parted ways in 2000, and in 2003, the actor tied the knot with Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor at the peak of her career. It was one of the grandest weddings in Bollywood, and they welcomed two kids, daughters Samaira and Kiaan. However, they filed for divorce in 2016, taking fans by surprise.
Later, in her divorce petition, the actress made serious allegations against Sunjay. She accused him of ‘auctioning’ her to his friends and physically assaulting her on their honeymoon. They also had a custody battle where Sunjay not only denied her claims but accused her of marrying him for money, using their children against him and using PR to defame him. After the divorce, they continued to co-parent their kids. After a year, Sunjay tied the knot with Priya Sachdeva. She had a daughter, Safira Chatwal, from her first marriage, and they welcomed a son, Azarius, in 2018.
Sunjay Kapur passes away at 53
Sunjay Kapur lived a relatively low-key life, but his love for polo was evident in some of his pictures. It was during one such game in the UK on June 12, 2025, where he was on a horse and reportedly, a bee entered his mouth. The sudden nature of events triggered a heart attack, and despite immediate medical intervention, he passed away.
