In a candid conversation with Zoom, Aamir Khan opened up about a role he lost—one that ended up becoming a turning point in Shah Rukh Khan’s career. The film in question? Darr, Yash Chopra’s psychological thriller that catapulted SRK to stardom with his portrayal of a dangerously obsessed lover.

Contrary to popular belief that Aamir had turned down the role, the actor clarified that he was, in fact, fired from the film. “I didn’t say no to Darr. I said yes, but I was fired from the film because I wanted a joint narration,” Aamir shared. “There were two actors and I have this principle that if there are two actors then the director should give a joint narration. And Yash ji did not want to do that, so he fired me.”
He further explained that his request wasn’t unusual or unreasonable but rather based on his approach to collaborative filmmaking. “Everyone has their own way of working. I think when two people are working together, they should listen to the narration together so we can work as a team,” he said.
Calling it a personal principle, Aamir added, “I believe if there are more actors, they should all listen to the film together. That didn’t happen in Darr, so I was fired. I was removed from Darr.”
Released in 1993, Darr starred Shah Rukh Khan, Juhi Chawla, and Sunny Deol. It went on to become a massive commercial success and was one of the earliest films where SRK embraced his now-famous “anti-hero” persona. His chilling delivery of the line “I love you, K-k-k-Kiran” became iconic and still lives on in pop culture today.
Speaking of the professional front, the 60-year-old actor is all set to return to the big screen with Sitaare Zameen Par. The RS Prasanna directorial is scheduled to hit theaters on June 20.
