Pride Month 2025 has started, and has already brought many heartfelt stories to light. However, hardly any of them were as deeply personal and unsettling as Trinetra Haldar Gummaraju’s recent revelation. The transgender doctor, content creator and actor recently shared a disturbing incident at a hospital where she was escorted out of a women’s restroom for not allegedly looking ‘female enough’ after she had her gender reaffirmation surgery.

Trinetra Haldar Gummaraju recalls her horrible experience at a hospital restroom

Trinetra, who is winning hearts with her latest show, Kankhajura, recently had a candid chat with Times Now and Zoom Digital. The Made in Heaven 2 actress recalled a distressing personal experience when she was not allowed to use a female restroom when she visited her endocrinologist after undergoing gender affirmation surgery.

During that phase, her feminine features were still developing. Unable to use the male restroom, she opted for the female one, but things took a shocking turn when a security guard escorted her out, mistaking her for a man. Trinetra quietly left to avoid a scene, but the incident deeply disturbed her. She shared:

“I was escorted out of a restroom in a hospital when I had gone to visit my endocrinologist. I was not looking female enough at that time, nor could I use the male restroom. I started using the female restroom, but I was escorted out by the security there because she thought I was a man. I couldn’t say much or do anything. I didn’t want to make a scene, and I got out of there. It was a disturbing experience. You’re not even able to perform biological functions because of this fear.”

Trinetra remembers avoiding drinking water in college to escape restroom harassment

This isn’t the first time Trinetra has had to compromise on her well-being for her mental and emotional stability. The 27-year-old doctor-influencer recounted her college days, where she often avoided drinking water, terrified of using the restroom and being harassed. This unhealthy practice even once led to a UTI (Urinary Tract Infection). However, these are the silent struggles that many trans individuals face, even in supposedly safe public spaces. The actress shared:

“There was a time in college when I didn’t drink water. If I drank a lot of water, I had to use the restroom, and something bad might happen. So, I didn’t drink water. I remember getting a UTI. That’s the kind of thing we go through. It is unfortunate that we live in such a society.”

    More about Trinetra Haldar Gummaraju

Trinetra Haldar Gummaraju first grabbed attention as the first openly transgender doctor in Karnataka, following which she became quite popular as a content creator. But it was her acting debut as ‘Meher Chaudhary’ in Made in Heaven 2 that turned her into a household name. And now, she is making headlines for her impressive acting in Sony LIV’s new series, Kankhajura, which premiered on May 30, 2025. In this series, Trinetra plays ‘Amy’, a character whose gender identity is not the focal point of the storyline, a rarity in the Indian OTT space.
