Actress Rupali Ganguly has praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for bringing attention to menstrual hygiene on national platforms and playing a key role in breaking the deep-rooted taboos around the topic in India.
Rupali Ganguly applauds PM Narendra Modi for breaking menstrual hygiene taboos on national stage: “All of these are very big and impactful steps”
Highlighting the significance of accessible sanitary products and menstrual education, Rupali emphasized that the Prime Minister’s initiatives have sparked important conversations and raised much-needed awareness, particularly in rural areas where these issues are frequently stigmatized or overlooked.
In an interview with IANS, the Anupamaa actress referred to PM Modi’s notable speech from the Red Fort, where he spoke about menstrual health. Rupali highlighted the introduction of affordable sanitary pad distribution and hygiene education programs, noting their positive impact on young girls who frequently drop out of school due to lack of awareness or access to proper menstrual care. She also emphasized that while women in urban areas may take sanitary pads for granted, the reality is quite different in remote regions of India, where such essentials are still seen as a luxury.
The ‘Sarabhai vs Sarabhai’ actress expressed, “I feel very proud, because sanitary hygiene, for me as a woman, is not a taboo topic. Modi ji is probably the first leader—world leader—who talked about menstrual hygiene from the Red Fort. And sanitary pads—affordable sanitary pads—reaching every woman, that was a matter of great pride for me. As a woman, I felt proud. There are so many girls who drop out of school because they don’t have knowledge about menstrual hygiene. So many girls drop out—some are ashamed, some don’t know how to use cloth properly.”
“So, providing sanitary pads may seem like a small gesture, but it’s actually a huge step. Women in cities often take these things for granted—just go and buy a sanitary pad, and that’s it. But for women and girls in rural, remote parts of India, having access to sanitary pads is incredibly significant. Teaching menstrual hygiene in schools is equally important, as is ensuring proper toilets are available for hygiene. All of these are very big and impactful steps.”
Discussing various welfare initiatives, Rupali Ganguly highlighted the government’s holistic approach to empowering women from childhood through adulthood. She praised the Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana, a savings scheme designed to secure the future of the girl child, describing it as a crucial step toward long-term financial empowerment. Rupali also commended the Ujjwala Yojana, which has provided LPG connections to millions of women in rural India. “It wasn’t just about giving them a gas cylinder—it was about giving them a chance at better health,” she remarked, emphasizing how the scheme has benefited women suffering from asthma and other health problems caused by traditional cooking methods.
Rupali also praised the government’s backing of women-led start-ups, highlighting programs like Smart Didi Yojana and Drone Didi Yojana as innovative and impactful initiatives. She further stressed the ongoing importance of the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao campaign, which has played a key role in transforming discussions around girls’ education and safety.
Focusing on sanitation, she emphasized the significance of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, one of the Modi government’s most well-known initiatives. She noted that building lakhs of toilets has not only enhanced hygiene but also restored dignity to women who previously had no access to basic sanitation.
Rupali Ganguly also addressed the long-awaited Women’s Reservation Bill, describing it as a historic milestone in Indian politics and a major victory for women who have been advocating for representation in Parliament for decades.
