In a statement posted to the singer’s social media accounts on Wednesday (June 11), Wilson’s family confirmed the news alongside a photo of the performer. “We are heartbroken to announce that our beloved father Brian Wilson has passed away. We are at a loss for words right now,” the statement read. “Please respect our privacy at this time as our family is grieving. We realize that we are sharing our grief with the world. Love & Mercy.”

As the founding member of The Beach Boys, Wilson led the iconic pop-rock group to glory throughout their storied career, earning the band four No. 1 hits and 15 top 10 songs on the Billboard Hot 100, as well as two No. 1 LPs and 13 top 10 albums on the Billboard 200. One of those top 10 projects was 1966’s Pet Sounds, an album that saw Wilson embracing experimental production techniques and sophisticated orchestrations to create a coming-of-age LP. Today, Pet Sounds is widely regarded as one of the most influential pop albums ever made. While Wilson ultimately left the group following the death of drummer and Wilson’s younger brother Dennis in 1983, the remaining members briefly reunited in 2012 for 50th anniversary world tour.

Wilson is survived by his seven children, including his two daughters Carnie and Wendy from his marriage to Marilyn Wilson-Rutherford, as well as his five adopted children with his late wife Melinda Ledbetter.

To honor Wilson’s iconic life and music career, Billboard compiled a gallery of photos documenting the late legend’s life.
