The chilling Meghalaya honeymoon murder case has left the nation in shock, and it keeps getting darker as new revelations come up. According to fresh reports surrounding the case, Sonam Raghuvanshi, the prime accused in the murder of her husband, Raja Raghuvanshi, had openly warned her mother of ‘serious consequences’ if she was forced to marry him, the very man she allegedly conspired to kill during their honeymoon. Sona’s brother-in-law shared chilling details with the police.
Raja Raghuvanshi’s elder brother recalls Sonam confiding about her secret relationship before the marriage
According to the victim, Raja’s elder brother, Vipin Raghuvanshi, Sonam had once confided in her mother about her secret relationship with 21-year-old Raj Kushwaha, an employee at her family’s business. However, Sonam’s family objected to the relationship and, despite her strong protests, pressured her into marrying Raja to uphold family and community expectations. According to NDTV reports, Vipin said that he was informed by an acquaintance about Sonam’s confession of her love for Raj. The source revealed:
“Sonam had already informed her mother about her affair with Raj. She said she did not want to marry Raja. Her mother, however, objected to the relationship (with Raj) and persuaded her to marry within the society.”
After being objected to her union with her boyfriend, Raj Kushwaha, Sonam had allegedly issued a grim warning to her mother before marrying Raja Raghuvanshi. According to Vipin’s statement to NDTV, Sonam had warned her mother about the consequences. The source revealed that despite the warning, none had thought that Raja could end up dead. A part of the report read:
“Vipin alleged that Sonam agreed to compromise and marry Raja, but warned of consequences. She said, ‘You will see what I do to that person. You all will have to bear the consequences.’ No one thought she would kill Raja.”
The unexpected murder on the honeymoon
24-year-old Sonam and 29-year-old Raja Raghuvanshi tied the knot in Indore on May 11, 2025. Less than two weeks later, their honeymoon in Meghalaya took a sinister turn. After checking out of a homestay in Meghalaya’s Nongriat village on May 23, 2025, the couple went missing, sparking concerns of a trekking mishap. A thorough search unearthed something unexpected when Raja’s decomposed body was discovered on June 2, 2025, found dumped in a gorge, 20 km from the homestay. A machete, allegedly the murder weapon, was found near the body, confirming foul play.

Investigations revealed that Sonam conspired with her alleged lover, Raj, and three hired killers, Akash Rajput (19), Vishal Singh Chauhan (22), and Anand Kurmi, to murder her husband. Disturbingly, the hitmen reportedly travelled with the couple from Bengaluru to the Northeast.

A senior police officer revealed that Sonam allegedly offered Rs. 20 lakh to the contract killers, though official confirmation is pending regarding the same. Sonam’s alleged lover, Raj, claimed that he backed out at the last minute, but the trio proceeded with the crime, killing Raja with sharp weapons as he trekked the trails of Meghalaya.
Sonam Raghuvanshi surrenders after running away
Sonam, who was allegedly present at the scene to ensure Raja’s death, fled and stayed in a hotel with Raj before quietly returning to Indore, where she remained for two days. After evading arrest for over two weeks, she surrendered at a police station in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, on June 9, 2025. Her surrender came hours after police arrested the three hired killers and Raj Kushwaha from different parts of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.
Police are digging deeper into the extent of planning behind the alleged contract killing of Raja Raghuvanshi.
