NEW DELHI: The ministry of external affairs on Tuesday raised the issue with the US embassy after an Indian student was detained by the authorities in the US, news agency ANI reported, citing sources.The ministry said that the Indian embassy in Washington DC and the Indian Consulate in New York have also been in touch with the US authorities to ascertain the details of the incident.It further said that it had not yet received any details about the incident or the circumstances under which the student was restrained, the flight he had to board or had boarded and his final destination.This comes a day after an Indian student was handcuffed and pinned to the floor at an airport in the United States before he was deported.A video was shared by X user Kunal Jain, an Indian-American social entrepreneur who writes books in Hindi, and recently relocated to India.According to Singh, the incident occurred at Newark Airport. He tagged the Indian Embassy, as well as external affairs minister S Jaishankar, seeking help for the boy. “I witnessed a young Indian student being deported from Newark Airport last night— handcuffed, crying, treated like a criminal. He came chasing dreams, not causing harm. As an NRI, I felt helpless and heartbroken. This is a human tragedy,” he posted on his social media handle.Meanwhile, the US embassy in India reiterated its stance on illegal immigration and said that it will not tolerate violation of any laws or visa abuse.In a social media post on X, the official handle of the US embassy said, “The United States continues to welcome legitimate travelers to our country. However, there is no right to visit the United States.”
