Karan Johar opened up about the remarkable journey of his production house, Dharma Productions, since its inception. Karan shared heartfelt insights about the partnership with his close associate Apoorva Mehta, who has been instrumental in the company’s growth.
EXCLUSIVE: Karan Johar reflects on Dharma Productions’ journey and success; says, “When me and Apoorva Mehta look back, we both feel proud. We were proud that we were able to make so many films”
In an exclusive Bollywood Hungama’s podcast, Karan said, “Well, I think Apoorva and I have built the company like siblings — with him being the older one, even though he’s just two months older than me. I treat him like my elder brother, someone I feel accountable to. In many ways, I feel he is my boss. I’m grateful to him because he runs the company like it’s his own. He has really built this company,” Johar revealed.
He spoke about the challenges he faced early on, especially after losing his father. “When I lost my dad in 2004 and 21 years ago. I was at sea. I didn’t understand economics, budgets, Excel sheets, accountancy, how to handle money, how to do anything. My storytelling acumen I believed in strongly but my business acumen wasn’t. And Apoorva came like a pillar of strength and support. He really helped me build the company the way it is and I couldn’t have done it without him.”
Reflecting on Dharma’s accomplishments, Johar expressed pride in the company’s diversified portfolio. “When we look back, we both feel proud. We were proud that we were able to make so many films, be a profitable company, and we were able to build equity through our reputation and content. We were able to now diversify and build a digital arm and an ad arm and a talent arm and now many more probably in the future. (Also) our distribution arm which we just started.”
He also paid tribute to his late father, adding, “I think my father would have been proud too. I don’t think he ever thought that we would have taken the company to where it is today. My dad was a simple man. He had basic simple needs. (He was) a good man to the industry.”
Though Johar and Apoorva seldom dwell on their achievements, the filmmaker acknowledged, “When we do take a beat, we should tell each other, ‘We’ve done well.’ The boys have played well.”
